Package store remodel checklist for independent owners
Use this checklist before you spend on contractors, signage, or a full redesign. It is written for liquor store and package store owners who want more foot traffic, a premium look, and a cleaner path through local rules.
1. Capture what you have today
- Phone photos of the full exterior (day and evening if illuminated)
- Interior walk-through photos: entry, aisles, coolers, checkout, back stock
- Rough square footage and which walls you can move vs. cannot
- Any city violation notices, permit letters, or hearing dates
- Competitor storefronts on your same corridor (what stands out)
2. Exterior & curb appeal
- Facade condition: paint, panels, stone, metal, awning, doors
- Primary storefront sign readable at driving speed
- Window graphics that look intentional (not cluttered paper signs)
- Lighting so the brand still reads after dark
- Security hardware integrated cleanly (not bolted-on afterthoughts)
3. Interior that sells
- Clear path from door to high-margin spirits and featured wine
- Display zoning: value, premium, craft, seasonal, gifts
- Checkout environment: clean, bright, branded, queue-friendly
- Cooler fronts and endcaps that do not look temporary
- Ceiling, floor, and lighting upgrades that make the room feel newer
4. Brand & signage package
- Logo usage consistent across exterior, windows, interior headers
- Illuminated letters or cabinet sign where code allows
- Large-format wall graphics and wayfinding
- Color and material palette that feels upscale, not generic
5. Approvals & community standards
- Confirm local sign and facade rules before fabrication
- If you need a variance or license presentation, align design with safety and neighborhood elegance
- Document how the remodel improves appearance for the community

6. Budget priority order (typical)
- What people see from the street (facade + main sign)
- Entry experience and first 15 feet inside
- Checkout and premium display zones
- Secondary graphics and remaining aisle polish

7. Before you book fabrication
- One clear concept (not three competing styles)
- Dimensions verified on site
- Permit path agreed
- Timeline that matches your busy seasons
